| Trat(Chang Island) Information - Thailand |
| |
|
|
|
Trat is Thailand's eastern-most province, located about 315 kilometers from Bangkok. This small province borders on Cambodia with the Khao Banthat mountain range forming a natural demarcation. With 52 large and small offshore islands, long white sandy beaches and unspoiled coral reefs, Trat offers delightful scenery and a tranquil hideout for nature-lovers. The province also serves as a major fruit-growing and fishing area.
The city of Trat is a starting point for Ko Chang island group or forays into outlying gem and Cambodian markets. Those enthralled by shopping will be delighted as Trat has more markets for its size than almost any other town in Thailand due to Cambodian coastal trade.
Like Chanthaburi, Trat is a very important ruby-mining province, with the most famous gem market located in Bo Rai District, some 50 kilometers north of the Cambodian border. |

The history of Trat can be traced back to the reign of King Prasat Thong of the Ayutthaya Kingdom. Formerly known as Mueang Thung Yai, Trat has played an important role in the development of country’s stability and economy due to its strategic location. The town of Trat has later become a community of Chinese Merchants. |

Trat served as a checkpoint and buffer city in 1767 and was responsible for providing provisions to King Taksin the Great before he moved his navy from Chanthaburi to Ayutthaya, where he expelled the Burmese and liberated the Kingdom from Burmese rule.
In Rattanakosin era, during the Paknam crisis in 1893 the French colonist army occupied the western part of Chantaburi. In 1904 in order to get back Chantaburi Siam had to give Trat to French Indochina. Trat became part of Thailand again on March 23, 1906 in exchange for many areas east of the Mekong river like Battambang, Siam Nakhon and Sisophon.
During the Indochina War, the French Navy tried to seize Trat again. The French – Thai Battle broke out on 5 January 1941. The battle ended 17 January at Ko Chang, when three Thai ships were sunk - the HTMS Chonburi, HTMS Songkhla and HTMS Thonburi. Later the Japanese ended the conflict by diplomacy. |

Trat is at the south-eastern end of Sukhumvit Road, which connects it with , Rayong, Chonburi and Bangkok.
Trat Airport caters primarily for tourists who travel directly from Suvarnabhumi Airport to Ko Chang without passing through the town.
Trat town is the main centre for road travellers to the Eastern Islands of Thailand including Ko Chang, Ko Mak and Ko Kood. There are regular buses, mostly hourly – taking 4-5 hours, from Bangkok Ekkamai (for Downtown Bangkok) and Bangkok Moh Chit for other destinations in Thailand. Many tourists stop over in a pleasant but cheap tourist area in Trat before going to the islands from Laem Ngop or Leam Sok (15-20 km from Trat); all guest houses can arrange for this although there is a shared taxi from the market (centre of town). There are ferry services and speedboat services to the Eastern Islands, ferries to Ko Chang taking 30-60 minutes - with the speedboat the time to Ko Kood is reduced to an hour.
Trat is also a transit point for people travelling to Cambodia, as it is a 90 minute minibus ride to the border at Hat Lek (again easily available at the bus station). After crossing the border there is a short journey to Koh Kong town where people can stay, or continue on to Sihanoukville by road or by sea.
